Gmail Smart-Delete Button Ver. 0.7.4 Interim Release!

PARTIAL FIX - In response to Gmail's playing games with their document object model, this interim release restores 'Smart-Delete' functionality for the 'Upper' Smart-Delete button in the main window AND, thanks to *** Meetesh Karia ***, the 'Upper' Smart-Delete button in the MailItem window!!!. (The lower buttons have yet to be addressed).

I will also try, in the near future, to integrate the logic of versions 7.2 and 7.4, so the script will work if Gmail continues to toggle back and forth their DOM changes.

Features: User defined keyboard shortcut - User can set which key they would like to use to trigger mail deletion. (The default letter is 'd', but by editing the script file any letter can be used. Just find the following line of code near the beginning of the script:
var TheDeleteKey='d';
And change the key letter to whichever one you like.
Be careful, though, not to select a shortcut already being used by Gmail!)

Is Gmail's Delete Button Good Enough?

Under constant pressure from Gmail userts (especially ours) Google has reluctantly relented and provided a delete button. The problem is, they did not go far enough. Google has included only the barest of features - namely, the ability to delete selected items.

What they left out, however, are features users of the Smart-Delete Button have come to expect, such as user-customizable keyboard shortcuts, a more logical button placement and 'smart' enabling of the button only when items are selected. (Whowants to see a 'No messages selected' error?)

Should we accept this? I think not!

Until Google comes to their sensesand gives the users of Gmailwhat theywant, we have somethingbetter: the Smart-Delete Button.

Gmail has changed how they identify some mail items which, in certain instances, leaves the Smart-Delete button disabled.

The specific sequence referred to is:
1. View a mail item.
2. Delete it (which returns you to the inbox).
3. View the next item and the button remains disabled.

For some reason, Gmail identifies this mail item differently than others. This release addresses this issue. Please try it out & let me know what you think.

The latest version of the Gmail Smart-Delete Button for FireFox's GreaseMonkey extension is 0.3.9.3. Some minor tweaks were performed on the 29th to get the 'd' keyboard shortcut to work properly. It seems quite stable now and I have gotten very positive feedback on this new feature. If you are experiencing any difficulties with the 'd' shorcut, simply re-install the script.

Per user request, it now provides keyboard shortcuts ['D' or 'd'] to delete selected mail items with a single keypress.

Simply install version 0.3.8 and you are done.

Alternately, you can change the include statements in GreaseMonkey's Options panel. Delete all existing include strings and add the string:

Apparently, Gmail does not play nice with timers in scripts, and so, after much experimentation, I have managed to do away with GSDB's main timer. I had been relying on it to recreate the button instance and enable/disable it when a checkbox was clicked. I needed this as Gmail's own client-side javascript code performs certain actions without generating any events! This meant I needed to revalidate at regular intervals.

Version 0.3.6 now manages to circumvent the need for a timer while still responding quickly to user actions. This should finally spell an end to the dreaded Lockdown in Sector 4!

In response to users suggestions, I've relocated the GSDB in this new version to the immediate right of the 'More Actions' dropdown. This along with changing the button's text color to Dark Red (when enabled), will help prevent accidental deletion clicks. Also, additional error trapping code was added to ensure robust and reliable performance.
